Writing Tips
Kirby 1) Reading is the best way I know to learn about writing. Camp out at the bookstore or library and read, read, read. Read classics, and brand new books. Read in genres you're interested in and those you aren't. Take notes on books' publishers, what works in them and what doesn't. This research serves two purposes: first, you can start to get a feeling for the necessary elements of good writing and, second, you will be acquiring information about potential publishers to whom you can send your stories.

2) Finish a story. Then another. Then another. Then another. Do you detect a theme here?

3) Take a writing class, join a writing group or attend a conference (or do all of these). You should certainly join the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (www.scbwi.org).
